Perhaps you're familiar with the age-old question: nature or nurture? That is, are we who we are because we were born that way, or are we the product of our environment? If only it were that simple! Like all things in life, the answer to this question is not black and white, but many beautiful – and confusing – shades of grey.
The truth is that both nature and nurture contribute to who we are. This applies to our personalities, our quirks, our hangups, our weaknesses, and our talents and gifts. So while Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was a child prodigy, he also spent his life at his piano. And there are many extraordinary pianists and composers out there who weren't prodigies – they just worked really hard.
Thomas Edison is famous for having said, “Genius is one per cent inspiration and ninety-nine per cent perspiration.” Just as virtually anyone has the capacity to be a great musician given passion, dedication, and lots of hard work, so can anyone hone their psychic abilities. Still, some people have more than a capacity – they have a gift.
If you're reading this, it's likely that you've been blessed with just such an inclination. It could be that you get a sensation of deja-vu just a little too often. Or that you tend to feel people before seeing them. Perhaps people seem to sense something about you. Maybe empathizing with others' suffering can be overwhelming for you – even debilitating.
Just like a muscle, our minds must be strengthened to operate at their optimum. This can be done in a number of ways, the most obvious of which is mediation. Quieting the mind, as any guru or yogi will tell you, is the most difficult – and most important – exercise anyone can do. Imagine a runner without their calf muscles, or a gymnast without their biceps. Meditation is at once purifying and strengthening. It gives the mind the space and it needs to engage in the deeply empathetic act of psychic communication.
There are many other exercises you can employ to work on more specific aspects of your ability. Scanning involves working with a partner to “read” one another in a safe, quiet space, and then to share your findings to ascertain your level of accuracy. This works best, of course, if you don't know the person already. You can also keep a dream journal, and take time to actively think about – and predict – testable things out-of-reach on this plane: the future, far-away loved ones' experiences, and the like. Record your outcomes. Over time, your increased precision will evidence your growth.
